Bio-CNG and bio-LNG for filling stations, fleets and heavy goods vehicles

Many filling stations already use biomethane as a fuel. For filling station operators, municipal utilities and companies with their own refuelling infrastructure, biomethane plays an important role in the context of the greenhouse gas reduction quota (GHG quota) and regulatory requirements in the mobility sector.

Biomethane is produced from organic residual and waste materials and upgraded to natural gas quality. As Bio‑CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) or Bio‑LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), it can be used within existing natural gas infrastructure.

The implementation of the EU Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III) and the further development of the GHG quota are changing the framework conditions in the fuel market. As a result, biofuels such as Bio‑CNG and Bio‑LNG are receiving increased attention from fuel suppliers and filling station operators and may create additional marketing opportunities.

Additional revenue opportunities through the GHG quota

The greenhouse gas reduction quota (GHG quota) requires fuel suppliers to progressively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. One way to achieve this is through the use of eligible biofuels such as Bio‑CNG and Bio‑LNG.

For filling station operators, municipal utilities and companies with their own refuelling infrastructure, the marketing of GHG quotas can represent an additional element of their business model. Key factors include the quality of the biomethane, the origin of the feedstocks used and traceability throughout the supply chain.

Certification systems

REDcert and ISCC are some of the certification systems for Germany and Europe that are recognized by the European Union and the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE). With a REDcert certificate, companies prove that their biomethane production or its use as fuel or electricity is sustainable in accordance with EU requirements. We help you certify your plant and guide you through the certification process.

Our service for you

With our expertise and knowledge of the industry, we will support you in switching to biomethane fuel – from secure procurement/delivery, through accounting and verification management, to certification. To this end, we offer individual delivery structures according to your wishes and country specific regulations.

In addition, we take care of the transfer of the greenhouse gas reduction quota in the German mobility sector, which is generated when refuelling with biomethane, natural gas and electricity. We guarantee service station operators and electricity suppliers complete acceptance and a binding fixed price, bundle the quotas and then pass them on to the companies that are subject to quotas, such as oil companies. 

Biomethane can be used as a vehicle fuel in two forms: for passenger cars as gaseous, CNG (compressed natural gas) or in heavy goods, rail or ship traffic as LNG (liquified natural gas).
