Achieve sustainability targets faster with biomethane

Munich, 17 February 2026. Germany aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% by 2035 and by at least 88% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, with the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2045. The pulp and paper industry also has an important role to play. The sector currently emits approximately 11.8 million tonnes of fossil-based CO2 annually1. By using biomethane, companies can contribute to the decarbonization of the industry while supporting environmental protection efforts.

Switching to biomethane is particularly straightforward. Thanks to its broad availability, implementation can be achieved quickly. Upgraded biogas can replace natural gas on a like-for-like basis due to its comparable combustion properties or be blended into existing gas supplies. No investment in machinery, infrastructure, or new technologies is required. Biomethane can be injected into the existing gas grid, transported to the point of use, and applied for a wide range of purposes, including process energy, electricity generation, and heat production, depending on the feedstock and resulting gas quality.

The pulp and paper industry also benefits from a unique opportunity: companies can produce, use, or market biomethane generated from residual materials created within their own production processes.

The use of biomethane offers several advantages for industrial businesses. It can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90%, helping companies achieve both voluntary sustainability commitments and regulatory climate targets more efficiently. In addition, companies using biomethane may be exempt from carbon pricing obligations under certain conditions and with appropriate documentation within the framework of Germany’s Fuel Emissions Trading Act (BEHG) and the EU ETS 2 system. In some European countries, the use of biomethane may also be recognized under the EU ETS 1 framework, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for industrial operators to purchase EU emission allowances.

bmp greengas, one of Europe’s leading biomethane traders, supports customers throughout the entire process, from selecting the right gas product to ensuring reliable delivery. Available options include biomethane produced from manure, energy crops, externally sourced biogenic residues and waste streams, or a company’s own residual materials. Our experts also provide support with ordering, balancing group management, transportation, proof of origin documentation, and certificate transfers.
